Allergies are Being Missed (Self) Diagnosed as Corona

Allen Smith, J.D. of SHRM recently published an article detailing the problems with confusing allergies and COVID-19.

“Allergy season is here. And so is the coronavirus … The possibility that employees may only have—or claim they only have—allergies may make sending them home more contentious. But experts say you may need to err on the side of caution and send sick employees home.

When an employer decides to send home someone who is coughing, “don’t do this in the open,” David Lewis, founder and CEO of the HR consultancy Operations, Inc in Norwalk, Conn said. “Don’t create an argument or debate. This is a communication with little room for discussion.”

Is It a Real Threat?

Regardless of what your opinion is, the threat to society of crowding sick people in to already overcrowded medical waiting rooms is real. The CDC advises us that unless you feel your life is threatened, to stay home, and call your local health department. When they have the time and resources, they will come to your location and test you.

In the meantime, stay away from other people as much as possible, hydrate and get plenty of rest.
